Shabazz Napier contemplated leaving Connecticut for the NBA following his junior season, but ultimately decided to remain in school because of a promise he made to his mother. Carmen Velasquez, a single mom to three kids, wanted her youngest child, Shabazz Bozie Napier, to get his degree.
“The only thing that she asks us to do, that if you’re going to start something, you’ve got complete it,” Napier said. “I told her I would definitely get my degree. Before I made my decision, she reminded me about my promise.”
This past weekend, Napier fulfilled his promise.

It’s been quite a few months for the Huskies’ basketball star. Napier helped lead Connecticut to a national championship in early April, and come June, he’ll likely be a high selection in the June 26 NBA Draft.
