Dick Vitale has been an active member of the public discourse surrounding the recent scandal at Louisville, and now he’s speaking out on behalf of athletic director Tom Jurich.
Vitale is clearly distraught over the wide-ranging scandal. After news broke, he left Pitino a voicemail asking him to resign.
However, as things have progressed, Dickie V has shifted his tone a bit. He has since spoken to the embattled Louisville coach and says that Pitino “vehemently” denies the allegations. He then caught some scrutiny for insinuating that Pitino’s major issue was making bad assistant coaching hires, taking the direct blame away from the head coach.
Now, Vitale is backing up the other huge figure who could be ousted by U of L: athletic director Tom Jurich.

Jurich has taken U of L from Conference USA all the way to the ACC during his tenure, and Louisville basketball is one of the most profitable college athletics programs in the country. The football program has also become a solid Top 25-caliber squad, with a recent Heisman winner. However, he has leaned into scandal and controversy with his decisions to rehire Bobby Petrino, and sticking with Pitino through his many scandals over the last decade.
It is no real surprise that Jurich appears to be on his way out with the basketball coach that he has tied his wagon to, but Vitale seems ready to go to bat for him.
