Last time Teddy Valentine refereed a game involved Joel Berry and North Carolina, controversy ensued.
Back on February 3, “TV” Teddy Valentine reared his ugly head. North Carolina traveled to Florida State for a big ACC match-up.
Midway through the second quarter of the hotly contested game, UNC star Joel Berry thought he was held by a Seminole defender while making his way up the court in transition. He tried to appeal his case to Valentine after the no-call.
Teddy Valentine didn’t hear out Berry. He didn’t even look at him.
Instead, he turned his back on the Tar Heels star. It looked incredibly disrespectful on film, and he took plenty of heat for it.
Tonight, Valentine officiated UNC’s game against Georgia Tech. He handled his encounter with Berry with much more class this time around.
Before the game, he went to speak with the UNC standout. According to Berry, he apologized.

Berry didn’t seem to have any hard feelings. From ESPN:
Berry and Valentine talked briefly, with both smiling as they gave each other a brief embrace.
Berry said Valentine “made sure that there was nothing wrong between us, and I told him it was all good.”
Berry told reporters that he didn’t think it was a big deal, but appreciated Valentine’s apology.
“You can have a learning experience at any age,” Berry said.
Things worked out for Berry on the court as well. UNC won the game 80-66.
Berry didn’t have a great shooting night, hitting just 3-of-17 shots from the floor. He did manage 16 points, thanks to an impressive 9-of-10 night from the line, and grabbed eight rebounds.
