The Syracuse Orange and Pittsburgh Panthers are all too familiar with each other. Today the two programs squared off on the hardwood at the Carrier Dome for their first ever meeting as part of the ACC — Syracuse was able to escape with a 59-54 win to move to 18-0 on the year, and the team was ecstatic to beat an opponent that is quite frequently a thorn in its side. Pitt had defeated Syracuse in 10 of the previous 14 matchups between the schools, including five of six on Syracuse’s home floor.
The game went down to the wire, and after the game, Orange head coach Jim Boeheim looked quite relieved to walk away with the win — he described the game as “a war” and a “Big East game” due to the old conference’s reputation for being a more physical league than the ACC:
I think that everyone gets where Jim Boeheim was coming from (literally), and I don’t think it was a slight at the ACC, but I’m not so sure that conference commissioner John Swofford will appreciate the quote.
