What was supposed to be a fun pregame ritual to entertain Kansas State fans turned into a very serious situation last Saturday in Manhattan, Kansas.
Prior to the Wildcats’ 35-12 victory, Willie the Wildcat (Kansas State’s mascot) tackled a member of the KSU cheer squad as part of the team’s tradition before an opponent enters Bill Snyder Family Football Stadium.
Usually, it works out well and fans get riled up for the opponent. That wasn’t the case against West Virginia, however.
The young man posed as a WVU fan was speared violently by Willie. He then suffered an apparent seizure following the hit. Here’s video, via kake.com – it’s hard to watch:
The student was taken to the hospital where he would be evaluated and released. Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported.
Following the incident, the school’s athletic department reviewed the practice. It’s a safe bet that they’ll be much more cautious moving forward.
