Baker Mayfield’s Heisman stock is at an all-time high after a crazy Bedlam performance, and his NFL Draft stock continues to rise.
Mayfield was 24-for-36 for 598 yards, six total touchdowns, and two interceptions in Oklahoma’s 62-52 rivalry win on the road.
Mayfield’s year has been so good, that the two picks might be the most surprising part of that stat line. He is completing over 71-percent of his passes for the year, with 11.86 yards per attempt, 28 touchdowns, and five interceptions.
Mayfield’s size has diminished his draft stock, but his eye-popping numbers may make up for it. Former NFL GM Scot McCloughan says that Mayfield is his favorite quarterback in the draft, and Bleacher Report draft expert Matt Miller says he can be a franchise quarterback. Now, the MMQB‘s Albert Breer has Mayfield in the late first round of his latest mock draft, and he sends him to a very intriguing spot.
27. New Orleans Saints: Baker Mayfield, QB, Oklahoma
Mayfield has generated heat with scouts over the last month. I think he could go Top 15. Or he could go in the third round, which is to say he’s polarizing. But how much fun would he be in Sean Payton’s system?
The Saints have famously had a ton of success with another undersized quarterback: future Hall of Famer Drew Brees. Brees can’t play forever, but probably has a few years left and looks great this season. The Saints may want to address immediate needs with a late first round pick, but Mayfield could be groomed as a quarterback of the future. This would be an extremely fun landing spot for the Heisman favorite.
