New Texas head coach Charlie Strong isn’t worried about what others – even boosters – are saying about the school’s decision to hire him. Strong went on The Dan Patrick Show this morning and talked about UT benefactor Red McCombs’ statements made earlier this week. McCombs, who wanted former NFL coach Jon Gruden for the job instead, said that Strong would be “a fine position coach” instead of a head coach. He also said it was a “slap in the face” when they hired him.
Strong’s main point? “I’m going to get judged on my work here.” He says he isn’t letting McCombs’ words bother him.
Strong is essentially right here – winning does cure all. The debate regarding whether or not Strong was a good hire for Texas won’t be answered until years from now.
