At one point Monday night, the No. 4 ranked team in the country, Villanova, trailed an unranked Creighton squad by 40 points. And while the Wildcats made the score at least a bit more respectable (96-68) in the game’s final few minutes, this was a blowout was from start to finish.
Creighton shot 60% from 3-point land, hitting a total of 21 (!) 3-balls on the night. Senior forward Ethan Wragge hit nine of them, scoring all 27 of his points from long range. The Bluejays also tallied 24 assists to Villanova’s 11. Will Artino’s alley-oop dunk put the exclamation point on the victory for Creighton.
As bad as it was for the Wildcats, it could have been much worse. After Artino’s dunk, which gave Creighton a 90-50 lead with just under six-and-a-half minutes to play, the Bluejays were respectful of their opponent and chose to run down the clock on each possession.
