Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery may not even make it back to Dayton, Ohio in time to see his players warm up for tonight’s NCAA Tournament game against Tennessee. But the Hawkeyes will be with him – at least in spirit – the entire day.
McCaffery’s 13-year-old son, Patrick, is scheduled to have surgery to remove a thyroid tumor (it’s not yet known whether it’s malignant or benign) in Iowa City today. McCaffery planned to make the trip back to be with his son and then return to Dayton before tipoff. Whether that’ll be possible remains to be seen, but you can bet he has the support of his guys regardless. According to the Associated Press, the Hawkeyes will bring back their “P-Mac” shirts they wore during last week’s Big Ten Tournament. Here are a few photos, if you didn’t see them the first time around.

It’s hard not to root for McCaffery and the Hawkeyes right now. It’s great to see that his players are able to put things into perspective – the NCAA Tournament, as important as it is, isn’t all that matters.
