It was a bit of a surprise earlier this year when Michigan forward Mitch McGary announced that he would forego his final two years of eligibility to declare for the NBA Draft. Word later came out that McGary was facing a year-long suspension for testing positive for marijuana, which played a major role in McGary — who missed basically the entire 2013-14 season with a back injury — deciding to go pro.
In a video for VICE Sports, McGary discussed his suspension, and argued that in the end, it was a good thing, because it provided him with a learning moment and it led to him being drafted by one of the premier organizations in the NBA, the Oklahoma City Thunder.
McGary does have a point, as he went from sitting out and watching Michigan play all year to getting drafted by a team with NBA Championship aspirations during the 2014-15 season. Still, it’s good to see that he understands his mistake and that it helped him grow as a person.
