Atlanta’s new Mercedes-Benz Stadium has already hosted a number of big college football games, and another non-conference match-up is being worked on for 2020.
Auburn and North Carolina are working on a deal to play in the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Classic that year.
The “kickoff” part of that title might be a bit different than usual, as the reported game is being looked at for Week 2 of the 2020 season.
Auburn Undercover, the 247Sports site covering the Tigers, first reported the news.
Auburn is inching close to a deal to add a Power 5 opponent to its schedule in 2020.
Auburn and North Carolina are finalizing discussions to play in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in Week 2 of the 2020 season, a person familiar with the discussions told Auburn Undercover.
The deal requires some reworking of the schedule for both teams. Auburn is scheduled to host Alabama A&M later in the year, but may move it up to Week 1 ahead of the potential UNC game, while North Carolina is slated to travel to UCF that day. The Tar Heels may have a bit more work to do to open up that date.
Auburn’s 2020 schedule also features home games against Southern Miss (Sept. 26) and UMass (Nov. 14), while UNC hosts Old Dominion at home (Sept. 26). The Tar Heels will still have one open schedule slot, likely for an FCS program, if this game is finalized.
The Tar Heels lead the all-time series with Auburn 4-2. The last match-up came in the 2001 Peach Bowl, a 16-10 win for UNC.
