Lane Kiffin: Alabama Wanted To Play Georgia

The Crimson Tide preferred a matchup with the Bulldogs, he says.

Alabama got the national title game matchup it wanted.

That’s what Lane Kiffin thinks, anyway.

The former Crimson Tide offensive coordinator, now the head coach at Florida Atlantic, says that Nick Saban’s program definitely preferred the matchup vs. Georgia over Oklahoma.

“I don’t think its any secret. If you were inside Alabama’s building, they would rather see Georgia because of the tempo of Oklahoma and the ability of Baker to make plays,” Kiffin said on ESPN’s First Take, as transcribed by 247Sports’ Kipp Adams. “If you look at the teams that have beat Alabama, the few teams that have done it. It has been tempo offense with a quarterback who can move around.

“I am sure they are pleased with the matchup this way.”

He’s right.

The teams that have given Nick Saban’s teams problems on the big stage – Ohio State, Clemson, Texas A&M – have all had quarterbacks capable of doing a lot.

Jake Fromm has been great for Georgia as a true freshman, but he’s not yet capable of doing things that Cardale Jones, Deshaun Watson, Johnny Manziel, Baker Mayfield, etc. can do.

Alabama and Georgia are set to meet in the title game on Monday in Atlanta at 8 p.m. E.T.
