Would he leave for the Aggies?
Multiple reports released this week have linked Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher to Texas A&M.
Now, Dan Wolken of USA Today is reporting that the Aggies are “expected to inquire” about Jimbo’s interest level in the A&M head coaching gig.
The team would first need to get rid of current head coach Kevin Sumlin.
From the report:
Texas A&M is expected to inquire about the interest level of Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher once its separation from current coach Kevin Sumlin is official at the end of the season, according to two people familiar with the situation.
Wolken cites Fisher’s longtime relationship with Texas A&M athletic director Scott Woodward as a reason for the Seminoles’ coach to want out. Following a disappointing season in which Florida state was a top preseason pick to make the playoff, Fisher could bolt for the SEC.
Texas A&M doesn’t have a problem compensating its coaches well. Fisher is signed with the Seminoles through 2024 at 5.55 million per season. The Aggies could certainly pay him more than that, and Fisher’s buyout stands at less than $7.2 million.
