The Texas coach is doing something he learned from the Ohio State coach.
If you’ve followed Ohio State football on Twitter in recent seasons, you’re likely familiar with the black-stripe aspect of the Buckeyes’ program.
Urban Meyer has all first-year players wear a black stripe on their helmets until they’re deemed worthy enough to be official parts of the team.
The removal of the black stripe is a big moment for Buckeye freshman and it’s often captured on social media.

One of Urban Meyer’s coaching proteges, Tom Herman, has taken this aspect of Ohio State and made it a part of his program.
All Texas first-year players have red stripes on their helmets this preseason.
Herman said the red stripes on helmets are for newcomers. "Pledging if you will"

If you’re going to follow in another coach’s footsteps, Urban Meyer is a pretty good choice.
