The first No. 1 seed to play in this year’s tournament is in an unexpected dogfight.
Gonzaga, the top seed in the West Region, leads 16th-seeded South Dakota State by only four points at halftime. The Bulldogs needed to finish the first half on a 7-0 run to take a 26-22 lead at intermission.
The first 20 minutes have been a struggle for both teams. Gonzaga is shooting just 31 percent from the field, with SDSU not faring much better (33 percent).

You might recall that earlier this week, ESPN’s Pablo Torre made Gonzaga the target of his annual 16-seed-over-a-1 pipe dream projection.
The odds of that prediction becoming reality are still slim, but the first few minutes of the second half of this game bear watching.
