The former tight end’s death has officially been ruled a suicide.
Aaron Hernandez’s death in prison has officially been ruled a suicide.
The determination of his death as a suicide came from the district attorney’s office in Worcester County, Massachusetts. They said there was no sign of struggle and he was found alone. Investigators say Hernandez, serving a life sentence for a 2013 murder, had blocked access to his room by shoving cardboard underneath the door to his cell.
There was some doubt among those close to him about the true cause of his death. Hernandez, 27, was found hanging by a bedsheet in his prison cell early Wednesday morning. He reportedly was found with the bible verse John 3:16 written on his forehead in red marker and three notes on his bed.
Hernandez’s brain will be turned over to medical study at Boston University’s Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy Center, which has been a leader in research on concussions on the brain.
