Tom Brady won’t be attending today’s White House ceremony honoring the New England Patriots.
The five-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback announced the news this morning, citing family reasons for his absence. A number of other New England players already had said they wouldn’t be attending, but said their disapproval of President Donald Trump was the reason why.
According to the Boston Herald, Brady’s family excuse is a legitimate one. He is spending time with his ailing mother, who is visiting from California.
Here’s more from the Herald:
Brady had fully intended on attending the ceremony prior to making this decision, according to sources close to the quarterback.
To add further context, today is the Patriots’ day off from the offseason workout program, so the players have limited free time this week, perhaps leading to Brady’s desire to maximize time with his mother.
Brady revealed after the Super Bowl that his mother has been dealing with cancer for over a year, and her prognosis is “good.”
We’ll never disapprove of spending time with mom.
