Sean Payton might be on the trading block.
The New Orleans Saints are reportedly considering trading their head coach, Sean Payton, this offseason.
CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora reports that league sources tell him the Saints might trade Payton for draft picks this offseason.
From his report:
A year after the Colts considered acquiring Saints coach Sean Payton, and a year after Payton signed a lucrative extension in New Orleans, a change of scenery is still possible.
League sources said the Saints — adrift in another lost season and with veteran quarterback Drew Brees spiraling in recent weeks — would consider moving the coach should there be suitors, and it would not likely require hefty trade compensation.
Trading Payton would reportedly free up about $40 million, according to La Canfora.
Payton, 52, is 92-64 as the Saints’ head coach. He’s had the position since 2006 and led the franchise to a Super Bowl during the 2009 season.
The Saints are 5-8 this season and haven’t made the playoffs since 2013.
