Earlier this year, Notre Dame senior linebacker Danny Spond called it quits on his football career after several years battling injuries and medical issues. The news was very sad for Irish fans — Spond was not only a key defender, but also a very respected leader and teammate in the locker room.
Rather than simply hanging it up and transitioning to life as a non-athlete, Spond elected to stay with the team and mentor the young linebackers, particularly star freshman Jaylon Smith, who has done a great job of filling the void that was left. Smith has been extremely appreciative of Spond’s willingness to teach and mentor him, and will honor Spond this weekend on Senior Day by donning No. 13:

This is very cool move by the freshman, and it likely means a lot to Spond and his family. Even though he hasn’t been playing in 2013, he is a huge part of this Notre Dame football team.
