While Thursday is the first big day for the NCAA Tournament, things technically kick off tonight with the first two “first round” play-in games. First up: the 16-seed game between the Albany Great Danes and Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers.

Prediction: Both of these teams are in the tournament on the strength of their conference tournaments. Albany knocked off top-seeded Stony Brook in the America East tournament, while Mount St. Mary’s did the same to NEC favorite Robert Morris. Both teams have similar records and RPI ratings. Albany has a better point differential this year, as the Mountaineers has been outscored by their opponents. The Great Danes are also making their second straight NCAA Tournament appearance, losing as a 15 seed to second-seeded Duke in the second round last year. Given Albany’s recent tournament experience, I’ll take the Great Danes in a close one tonight, and advance on to play No. 1 Florida.
