Despite trailing by as many as 15 points in the second half, Notre Dame had itself in position to steal a victory from Georgia Tech on the road. But missed shots, an untimely turnover and a poor decision by Eric Atkins wound up costing the Irish the game.
In the game’s final seconds, trailing by three points, Atkins, thinking he was going to be fouled (or that he already had been), threw up a crazy 3-point attempt that bounced wildly off of the backboard. The miss essentially ended Notre Dame’s hopes.
While you can understand what Atkins was trying to do, it was a very, very risky play that wound up backfiring.
The loss leaves the Irish at 1-2 in ACC play and 10-6 overall. They travel to Maryland next Wednesday.
