Smart couldn’t care less about the CFP rankings.
On Tuesday, Georgia earned the No. 1 ranking after the committee released its first set of College Football Playoff rankings, finally dethroning the Alabama Crimson Tide who’ve been atop the polls since the season began.
It’s a pretty big deal for the program, and while the players and fans might love it, there’s one person who doesn’t: head coach Kirby Smart. In fact, he absolutely hates it, as he referred to the No. 1 ranking as the dreaded “D” word.

UGA coach Kirby Smart on the No. 1 CFP ranking: "It really means nothing right now. It’s really nothing more than a distraction.”

Fair enough—it really doesn’t mean anything at all at this point, but the ranking does serve as a testament to just how dominant the Bulldogs have been this year. They’ve definitely earned it, and while Smart might think it serves as a “distraction,” it might just motivate his players to compete even harder to maintain their top-dog status.
