It is extremely late for a recruiting service to make a change in its basketball rankings for a class that is almost completely signed, but Scout just vaulted a new basketball player to No. 1 for 2017.
DeAndre Ayton, an Arizona baketball signee, is universally thought of as one of the top players in the country.
Scout was right there with the other three sites, when it moved Ayton down to No. 3 in mid-April. However, today Evan Daniels and Josh Gershon announced a rare late shake-up, moving Ayton back to the top spot.
Back in mid-April we moved DeAndre Ayton from No. 1 to No. 3 when we released our post all-star event top 100. Upon further review, we’ve changed our minds and are moving Ayton back to No. 1 in the 2017 class.
Sometimes you just change your mind.
So with that said, despite releasing what we called our final 2017 rankings back in mid-April, we are moving center prospect DeAndre Ayton up from No. 3 to No. 1 in our 2017 Top 100, jumping Michael Porter and Mohamed Bamba.
The post states that while the site’s analysts have long thought that Ayton is the most talented player in the class, effort questions hurt his stock a bit. However, they believe that he is “maturing as a prospect” and has a higher ceiling than Porter and the other top 2017 recruits.
There is also an interesting note about a similar situation with Markelle Fultz last season.
This time last year, following the USA Basketball u18 trials, it was our belief that Markelle Fultz had developed into the top overall prospect in the 2016 class, yet we didn’t update our rankings and left him at No. 3 in the class.
Fultz showed improvement and it was clear to our basketball recruiting team that he was the No. 1 prospect in that class and he wound up going No. 1 in the past June’s NBA Draft.
We had the right evaluation, we just didn’t act on it. So we aren’t making that mistake again.
Ayton, the nation’s top center, is joined by fellow five-star Emmanuel Akot, and four-star prospects Alex Barcello, Ira Lee, and Brandon Randolph in Arizona’s class. It is one of the best group’s on the country, and combined with the existing talent on Sean Miller’s squad, should have the Wildcats contending in a big way this upcoming season.
