Willie Taggart looks to have Oregon heading in a good direction, but he may very well be out the door after just one season, with the opening at Florida State.
Taggart is a top candidate for the job according to Yahoo! Sports’ Pete Thamel. OddsShark has him at -175 to take over the Seminoles, with the next best odds at +600 for Justin Fuente. That’s pretty overwhelming.
Now John Canzano, the very tapped in Ducks columnist for The Oregonian, thinks he’s as good as gone.
After an unconvincing job of trying to reassure Ducks fans that he’d be around next year, Canzano appears to have already moved on.
Why wouldn’t he be back?
Because Florida State is a dream job for a kid born in Florida. Because the Seminoles would be fools not to look hard at Taggart, who recruits their state better than anyone. Because in order to make those home visits in the Sunshine State he wouldn’t have to board an airplane and keep himself busy on Twitter. All the talent in the world is a short drive away in Florida.
If Florida State wants Taggart, he’s gone.
Oregon has become a very good job, with a history of recent success and championship game trips, and mountains of Nike money and intrigue. However, Florida State is a blue blood from Taggart’s home state, where he is most comfortable recruiting. Oregon just made a very good hire and is in position to do it again, if and when Taggart leaves, but there’s not shame in losing a Floridian to the Florida State job.
