It is a big off-season for basketball programs at big time football schools. Texas made a big splash in hiring former VCU head coach Shaka Smart, who was quick to introduce himself to football coach Charlie Strong at a spring practice. New Alabama coach Avery Johnson, who previously led the Dallas Mavericks and Brooklyn Nets, followed suit today, introducing himself to Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide football team today.
Johnson was definitely an unexpected hire, but he does have a lot of NBA experience, and is a name that recruits will likely be familiar with. Johnson was named NBA Coach of the Year and led the Dallas Mavericks to the NBA Finals in 2006. With this hiring, as well as Rick Barnes at Tennessee, SEC hoops are definitely getting more interesting.
