Auburn freshman Jakell Mitchell, who redshirted this past season, was shot and killed Sunday morning at an apartment complex near the school’s campus, the Auburn Police Department has confirmed. Mitchell was just 18 years old.
Auburn police captain Will Matthews told AL.com that his department responded to a shooting at the Tiger Lodge apartment complex at 12:25 AM. Mitchell had suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to the hospital by ambulance. He died shortly after being admitted to the emergency room.
Thus far, no suspect has been apprehended by police. The school, however, says that there is no known threat to campus at the moment.

Mitchell was expected to compete for a starting role either at tight end or running back in 2015. The school has advised anyone in need to contact its Division of Student Affairs.
