Canyon Barry, a grad transfer from College of Charleston, set a Florida school record with 39 consecutive free throws. Like his dad, NBA great Rick Barry, he knocks them down granny-style.
Barry, who is averaging 12.7 points per game for the Gators, was a perfect 4-for-4 from the stripe in Florida’s 71-62 win over Texas A&M. He hasn’t missed a free throw since January 7, and is hitting 89.2-percent of his free throws on the season, tops on the team.
Considering Barry’s success, and his Hall of Fame father’s 90-percent career free throw percentage, one would think that more players would give the granny-style a shot, especially considering how bad some standout NBA big men are. However, the only notable player to make the switch in recent years has been former Louisville star Chinanu Onuaku. He now plays, and shoots granny-style, for the Houston Rockets.
We’ll see if the younger Barry’s success spurns on more to try the unconventional free throws. For some player, it honestly can’t hurt.
