Lakers are refuting Calipari to Lakers story put out by Rex Chapman before NCAA tip: GM Mitch Kupchak says “rumor is untrue”

Earlier: We’re just over an hour from tip-off for tonight’s national championship game between Kentucky and UConn, but we’ve already got one major post-game rumor circulating the Internet. Former Kentucky star Rex Chapman, who called the Wildcats Final Four game against Wisconsin on TNT as part of Turner’s “Teamcast”, is claiming that UK coach John Calipari will be leaving the school to become the next coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, win or lose. Remember, this is just Chapman’s word – there is nothing official out there.

It’s hard to know what to make of this – many in the industry have said that they believe that this is Calipari’s last year in Lexington. But Cal himself has always been vocal about his desire to stick around. Could Chapman be trolling his own fan base ahead of the title game? Sure, but why? We’ll find out soon enough if there’s any truth here.
