There was a lot of hype surrounding the Kentucky Wildcats coming into the 2013-14 basketball season. UK showcases perhaps the most talented freshman class of basketball players ever seen, but was underwhelming out of the gate, dropping games to Michigan State, Baylor, and North Carolina. Many observers still acknowledged Kentucky’s talent, but wrote the ‘Cats off as being too young and too experienced to make a huge splash this year.
Head coach John Calipari, however, is not counting his team out. The team has experienced some recent success, defeating rival Louisville and starting off 2-0 in SEC play. After today’s grind-it-out win vs. Vanderbilt, Coach Cal talked about where his team stands nationally, in his eyes:
Calipari: “We’re still not there. But I’m looking around the country, nobody’s there. We have the most upside of anybody.”

Calipari may be right — many of the nation’s top teams have suffered losses already, and no teams, even the few undefeated ones that remain, look invulnerable. If the Wildcats continue to round into form and learn to play with each other, they could be a very dangerous force yet again come tournament time.
