Yesterday, Kentucky’s Dakari Johnson tweeted out a picture of the number he chose to wear on his jersey for the upcoming season. Normally players pick numbers based on their high school jersey number or their all-time favorite player — but for Johnson, it was a heartfelt decision. Two weeks ago, Johnson’s grandfather, who he called “Baba G”, passed away. To honor his grandfather, Johnson picked jersey number 44, which is the number his grandfather wore when he played at LIU Brooklyn.
Here’s Johnson’s tweet:
It’s only right to represent love you Baba G ✊✊let my works speak for me instagram.com/p/aMKIcMy1tM/

This is a pretty cool gesture — Johnson’s grandfather had a big impact on the people around him, and will certainly be missed:
Went to Brooklyn for the funeral of Dakari’s grandfather, Jitu Weusi, an activist & educator who moved people forward and made a difference.
