Story: The Kentucky women’s basketball team won its opening NCAA Tournament game against the Navy Midshipmen.
The Wildcats came out slow after not playing an actual game in two weeks. Jennifer O’Neill, who normally sets the pace for Kentucky, was missing in action throughout the first half. UK trailed by one at halftime against a tough Navy team.
After a halftime pep talk from Coach Insell, O’Neill came out firing. She scored seven straight points in the first two minutes of the second half. Everything else would fall into place for the Cats, who took away the victory without backup center Samantha Drake.
Drake, who is a huge factor in UK’s five for five substitutions, was suspended indefinitely by Coach Mitchell. According to Mitchell, Drake has not been upholding the Kentucky basketball standard.
Kentucky will take on the winner of Dayton and St. John’s Tuesday at 7 p.m.
