Update: Clowney’s press conference kicked off closer to 6:00 PM ET – we have video of the event here.
Earlier: The drama surrounding South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney has hit an all-time high. The Gamecocks star, who sat out this past Saturday’s game against Kentucky with a muscle strain near his ribs, was criticized by coach Steve Spurrier after the game. Spurrier seemed to imply that Clowney made a decision not to play – not that he was actually too injured to play. Via ESPN:
“(If Clowney) wants to play, we will welcome him to come play for the team if he wants. But if he doesn’t want to play, he doesn’t have to play. Simple as that.”
“He may not be able to play next week. I don’t know. But we’re not going to worry about it, I can assure you of that.”
While Spurrier has since softened his stance, Clowney’s decision not to play has been scrutinized across the country. Today, Clowney will address the media himself at 6:30 ET, ESPN announced.

It’ll be interesting to see what Clowney has to say. Many have speculated that he’ll be announcing that he’s shutting it down for the season to focus on the NFL Draft, but that honestly seems unlikely. Perhaps he’ll apologize for not keeping his coaching staff up-to-date on his injury status. Whatever the reason, we’ll find out soon enough.
