South Carolina opens its 2014 season Aug. 28 at home against Texas A&M. Steve Spurrier isn’t quite ready to turn his attention toward his team’s season-opening opponent, though.
Spurrier asked if he’s ready to turn attention to Texas A&M now: “Noooo. I am ready to turn my focus on golf tomorrow.”

Spurrier is an avid golfer. When he was the coach of the Washington Redskins, it was rumored that he scheduled the team’s practices and meetings around an afternoon tee time. He calls this part of the year “golf season” as he isn’t able to hit the links during the fall or winter.
The coach Spurrier will be going up against Aug. 28, Texas A&M’s Kevin Sumlin, has a different mindset.
Sumlin’s focus is on the Gamecocks.
“A new challenge and we better get it going pretty quick because Coach Spurrier has been pretty quiet,” Sumlin told ESPN.com. “That means he thinks they’re pretty good. I’ve been around long enough to know that. He thinks they’re pretty good, and they are pretty good.”
South Carolina and Texas A&M have yet to meet as SEC opponents. Both squads are likely to open the season as top-15 teams.
