Ferguson was a three-star prospect, according to 247Sports composite rankings, selecting the Vols over Alabama, Clemson, and LSU among other programs.
The 6-foot-3 pro style quarterback was competing for the starting job with three players who got snaps last year—Justin Worley, Joshua Dobbs, and Nathan Peterman. None of the three were overly impressive, and Tennessee finished the season ranked 109th in passing yards per game.
