Houston Announces It Has Hired Major Applewhite As Its New Head Coach

Houston has officially hired Major Applewhite as its new head coach.

So much for Lane Kiffin heading to Houston. Friday, Houston officially announced that Major Applewhite, the team's offensive coordinator, will become its next head coach. Hunter Yurachek, the school's Athletic Director, made the news official with a tweet. It includes a video, calling Applewhite the new leader of the "H-Town Takeover."

Applewhite, who played at Texas from 1998-2001, has been in coaching since 2003. He's had stops at Texas, Syracuse, Rice, Alabama and Houston.

Applewhite isn't the sexy name that Houston fans were craving after Tom Herman's departure, but that doesn't mean he won't be a successful coach. He'll certainly have his work cut out for him after the team's success the past two years.
