Chad Morris Is Having SMU Put Up Empty Case For National Championship Trophy In Office Lobby

Chad Morris spent four years as offensive coordinator at Clemson before taking the head coaching job at SMU this off-season, and it looks like he plans to borrow a strategy from one of his former ACC opponents. Virginia Tech famously put up an empty trophy case in its football office, which is to be filled when the Hokies win their first national championship. According to USA Today's Paul Myerberg, who spent time with Morris today, SMU will be doing the same.

While the confidence is commendable, we wouldn't expect SMU to fill that case any time soon. The Mustangs managed just one win this season while finishing dead last in the nation in scoring offense, and second-to-last in scoring defense. SMU is a complete rebuilding job, and play in a non-power conference, so the chances of them ever reaching the College Football Playoff are slim. Also, this strategy hasn't exactly worked out for Virginia Tech, despite the Hokies' status as a national power at times during the last two decades.
