Brandon McManus Is A Serious NFL Prospect

Not your average kicker.

If I were to tell you that midway through the collegiate football season, Temple's kicker and punter would be the team's most valuable player, you might think I'm not fit to be a sports journalist covering the Owls football team. Well, don't jump to any conclusions just yet, because Brandon McManus may, in fact, be Temple's most valuable player in a season that has further proved the school is in the Big East to stay.

McManus has provided the Owls with a crucial component in special teams play and is one of only eight players in the entire country to handle both kicking and punting duties, making McManus a serious NFL prospect.

After five games, McManus is 15 for 16 on PAT's and is 8 for 10 on field goal opportunities. He is Temple's leading scorer this season with 39 total points and is averaging 44.9 yards per punt. Of the 28 times McManus has kicked off, he has forced an astounding 21 touchbacks, putting Temple's defensive unit in great position time and time again. McManus ranks twelfth in the nation in punting.

Named the National Specialist of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards, McManus has been receiving national accolades all season long for his brilliant special teams play. He has already been named the Big East Specialist of the week three times and may prove to be the conference's best kicker and punter by the end of the season.

With only 19 seconds left to play in regulation on Saturday vs. UConn, McManus drilled an extra point to tie the game. Then, in overtime, he kicked the game-winning 29-yard field goal, giving the Owls two straight Big East victories for the first in program history.

Temple has a viable option late in games in McManus and a reliable leg to lean on when the game is on the line. After all, this isn't the first time McManus has drilled a clutch field goal in the waning moments of the game. If McManus continues on this trend, the two-way kicker will be putting on an NFL uniform every Sunday next year.

Even Coach Addazio had some serious praise for McManus following his game-winning kick:
