An officially licensed bookstore at Tulane is selling an interest tee shirt.
UCF finished 13-0 this past year with an AAC title and a victory over Auburn, a team that beat both Alabama and Georgia, in the Peach Bowl. As such, the Knights are declaring themselves national champions – even though they weren’t selected to play in the College Football Playoff. It’s a move that has drawn mixed reviews. Some think it’s genius. Others, not so much.
Fellow AAC schools Tulane might be trying to cash in on the situation, too. An officially licensed bookstore at Tulane is holding a pre-sale for “National Champions 1998” tee shirts – since the Green Wave finished undefeated 20 years ago. That year, they finished 12-0 under Tommy Bowden with a victory over BYU in the Liberty Bowl.
Tennessee, of course, won the 1998 BCS national title by beating Florida State in the Fiesta Bowl.
Tulane is not the only team to finish undefeated and not win a national title, obviously. It’ll be interesting to see if other schools follow suit – either as a joke or in a serious manner.
