Dennis Byrd, a former defensive lineman for the New York Jets, has passed away.
Dennis Byrd played college football at Tulsa and later went on to play in the NFL for the New York Jets. He reportedly died in a car accident in Oklahoma on Saturday, per Tulsa World.
According to Tulsa World, he was killed in a two-vehicle collision on Oklahoma 88 north of Claremore. The collision reportedly sent two others to the hospital in critical condition.
Byrd's football career came to a sudden halt in 1992 when he suffered a serious neck injury in a game and was told he would never walk again. Remarkably, he recovered to walk again, within weeks actually, and was actually present for the Jets' season opener the following year.
Tulsa athletic director Derrick Gragg said: “We extend our sincere condolences to Dennis’ wife Angela, their children and the entire Byrd family. Dennis exemplified true determination, tremendous heart and humility throughout his life. He had a tremendous playing career at TU and professionally with the New York Jets. He overcame great personal adversity after a life-altering injury on the football field. We know that Dennis touched numerous lives and will be missed by many.”
Byrd was 50 years old.
