Athlon Sports, one of the go-to sources for college football previews, just rolled out its predictions for the ACC football season. Spoiler alert: it is Clemson heavy.
That is for good reason, of course. The Tigers are the defending national champions, and have won two titles in three years.
Trevor Lawrence begins his first full season as a starter, and is surrounded by crazy skill position talent. He and running back Travis Etienne will start the year in the Heisman conversations, and Lawrence is likely an early favorite for the award.
Beyond Clemson, there are some interesting storylines in the ACC. Athlon likes 2018 breakout team Syracuse to continue its strong play under Dino Babers, and a new team to rise up in the Coastal Division: Virginia.
Athlon put out record predictions for all 14 ACC teams in today’s conference preview.
Here’s how the publication sees the two divisions shaking out:
ACC Atlantic Division:
- Clemson: 13-0 (8-0)
- Syracuse: 9-3 (5-3)
- Florida State: 7-5 (4-4)
- NC State: 7-5 (4-4)
- Wake Forest: 7-5 (3-5)
- Boston College: 6-6 (4-5)
- Louisville: 4-8 (2-6)
ACC Coastal Division:
- Virginia: 9-4 (6-2)
- Virginia Tech: 8-4 (5-3)
- Miami: 8-4 (5-3)
- Pitt: 6-6 (4-4)
- Duke: 5-7 (3-5)
- North Carolina: 4-8 (2-6)
- Georgia Tech: 4-8 (2-6)
This has the Hoos advancing to the ACC Championship Game for the first time, edging out rival Virginia Tech and Miami for the division crown. They last won the ACC in 1995, but have not done so since the conference split into divisions.
There, as the records show, they will fail to take out Clemson, which Athlon projects to go 13-0 and, barring something absolutely crazy, another run to the College Football Playoff. And so it goes…
