Clemson hasn't declared a starting quarterback yet, but one of the contenders is out in front according to head coach Dabo Swinney.

Junior Kelly Bryant, redshirt freshman Zerrick Cooper, and true freshman Hunter Johnson are all vying for the starting spot.

Johnson, a five-star recruit and the No. 2 pro-style quarterback in the class of 2017 per 247Sports, is the most intriguing option on the roster.

However, Swinney isn't quite ready to hand him the keys to the defending national champions.

As of now, he says Bryant is No. 1 on the depth chart.

Bryant has played sparingly in reserve duty through his first two collegiate seasons, completing 13-of-19 passes for 75 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. He's done some damage on the ground as well, rushing for three career touchdowns. In 2015, he ran 23 times for 156 yards and two scores. Last season, he picked up 22 yards on 12 carries. That doesn't mean Johnson is definitely set to redshirt. Swinney said that even if he winds up third on the depth chart, he will see time in September.

Clemson should have an opportunity to play three guys to start the year, as it opens against Kent State. However, things quickly ramp up from there. In Week 2, Clemson hosts Auburn, which could be very dangerous this season, and a week later travels to Louisville to face the Cardinals and Heisman winner Lamar Jackson.
