The 2019 college football season was one for the ages. Now, all eyes look ahead to what’s to come in 2020.
NCAA sports journalist and college football expert Wayne Staats has released his way-too-early 2020 preseason top 25 rankings. Surprisingly, neither Alabama or Ohio State checks in at No. 1.
Dabo Swinney and the Clemson Tigers are expected to win the 2020-21 National Championship. QB Trevor Lawrence and RB Travis Ettiene return for what’s expected to be the top offensive unit in the country. For that reason, the Tigers are the top ranked team in Staats’ preseason rankings.
Ohio State, which lost to Clemson in last season’s semi-final contest, checks in at No. 2 followed by Alabama at three. The top 10 teams in the 2020 preseason rankings can be found below:
- Ohio State
- Penn State
To no surprise, five of the preseason top 10 teams hail from the SEC. Alabama is the clear conference favorite. But Florida has emerged as a darkhorse to take the crown.
Meanwhile, Ohio State and Penn State both represent the Big Ten while Clemson (ACC), Oregon (Pac-12) and Oklahoma (Big 12) are the lone representatives from each school’s conference in the top 10.
