Dabo Swinney Trolled Alabama, SEC Hard With Quote About The Citadel

Some around college football have floated the idea that the SEC really isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. With the way some SEC teams have struggled this year, it could call into question just how much more challenged a team like Alabama is before the College Football Playoff. Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney did just that this week.

And now it looks like Alabama’s post-season rival is taking them to task for it.

On Tuesday, Swinney trolled Alabama and the rest of the SEC with his analysis of The Citadel. He claimed that Alabama’s game against The Citadel last year was their toughest game before they took on Georgia in the SEC Championship Game.

Via Football Scoop:

“That’s college football… I mean heck, The Citadel was probably Alabama’s toughest game last year until Georgia. I mean I’m just telling the truth. The Citadel beat South Carolina somewhere here in the not-too-long-ago (past). That’s not a shocker. Georgia State went over and beat Tennessee. I mean that’s college football…”

That’s a pretty harsh dig at the entire SEC, to say that an FCS school was a tougher opponent than any of Alabama’s eight SEC opponents and other FBS foes.

The thing is…he might be right, to a point.

The Citadel actually held Alabama to a 10-10 halftime lead in that game last year. But the Crimson Tide blew the doors off the Bulldogs in the third quarter en route to winning 50-17.

By most accounts, that actually was one of the toughest games Alabama wound up playing that year. The Crimson Tide would finish the season 14-1, with the lone loss coming to Clemson in the national title game.

Dabo Swinney may want to hold off on teasing the SEC too much. The ACC that his Tigers have dominated for the last five years hasn’t exactly been a murderer’s row either. That same Citadel team just beat Georgia Tech last weekend.
