We’re nearly one month away from college football starting up again, which has led to a plethora of preseason predictions over the past few days. Earlier this week, ESPN was the latest media outlet to jump in with their projections, as it released the latest version of its Football Power Index.
The FPI serves as a predictor for a team’s performance heading into next season. It shows which program rank above or below average.
In addition to ranking teams, the FPI also gives a projected record for each program that includes a potential conference championship.
As you’d expect, the highest-ranked team in the ACC is Clemson. The defending champions also have the best rank of any team in all of college football.
Here is how the rest of the ACC unfolds based on projected records, per ESPN’s FPI:
- Clemson (12.3-0.7)
- Florida State (8.1-3.9)
- NC State (7.4-4.6)
- Syracuse (6.7-5.3)
- Wake Forest (6.1-5.9)
- Boston College (5.1-6.9)
- Louisville (4.4-7.6)
- Virginia Tech (8.4-3.9)
- Miami (8.2-4.1)
- Virginia (7.4-4.7)
- Pittsburgh (6.7-5.5)
- North Carolina (5.4-4.6)
- Duke (5.3-6.7)
- Georgia Tech (3.7-8.3)
Once again, these are simply projections for team’s records, not their actual FPI ranking.
It seems like Clemson would handle the ACC with ease and punch its ticket to the College Football Playoff. On the other side, it appears that Virginia Tech and Miami could battle it out for a trip to the ACC Championship game.
