Mel Kiper is thought of as one of the best draft analysts in the business. When he vouches for a certain prospect, the public tends to listen.
There are plenty of notable prospects available in the 2020 NFL Draft, such as Joe Burrow and Tua Tagovailoa. Most analysts also believe this draft has a can’t-miss prospect in Chase Young from Ohio State.
Young might be considered the best prospect by many, but Kiper doesn’t believe he’s the most NFL-ready out of the group. Instead, he thinks Clemson linebacker Isaiah Simmons deserves that title.
Kiper had a glowing review for Simmons, who proved over the course of his career at Clemson that he’s one of the most versatile defensive players in the country.
Here’s what Kiper had to say about Simmons, via 247Sports:
“Certainly, I think Isaiah Simmons, with the versatility he has, will be the No. 1 guy on that list,” Kiper said. “He can run, he can cover — I mean, covers like a safety/corner, can get to the quarterback. He would be the one guy you would highlight just because he’s the most versatile. He would be the so-called most NFL-ready player.
Simmons was dominant this past season, totaling 104 tackles, seven sacks and three interceptions.
As of right now, most mock drafts have Simmons going inside the top five. He’d be a nice fit for a defense in need of a playmaker like the New York Giants.
