Report: Clemson QB Chad Kelly Released From Football Team

Update 4: Via a Clemson intern named Ali Rogers, we have an update on the "fender bender" involving Kelly that took place earlier this week. You can read the post here.

Update 3: Clemson sent out an official press release at 5:00 PM EST, which includes a short statement by coach Dabo Swinney. Kelly has been kicked off the squad for "conduct detrimental to the team".

"I have dismissed Chad Kelly for conduct detrimental to our program. He has had a pattern of behavior that is not consistent with the values of our program. I hope he will mature and grow from this and become the man and player I know he can be. I wish him nothing but the best in the future academically and athletically."

Update 2: Updating an earlier report, both Clemson and Kelly are denying that police were involved in the matter. However, it does appear that the "incident" involved a fender bender and that Kelly had a meeting with the coaching staff that "did not go well".

Earlier: Clemson quarterback Chad Kelly, who is competing with teammate Cole Stoudt to become the Tigers starting signal-caller after Tajh Boyd's graduation, got a little frustrated with his coaching staff after being benched in the second half of this past Saturday's spring game. But if we're to believe what we're hearing via multiple reports, that was just the beginning of a very disappointing day for the redshirt freshman.

According to Roy Philpott of, Kelly was involved in an incident Saturday night after the contest. According to Marc Dopher of WYFF News 4, Kelly was escorted out of practice today by police.

While it's not yet known what exactly is alleged to have occurred, Kelly has already responded to the situation on Twitter. He claims that someone has lied about the incident.

It's far too early to speculate about Kelly's future on the team or at the university. We'll keep you updated.
