Watch: 5-Star Clemson QB Hunter Johnson Burns Redshirt, Throws 1st Career TD Pass

Hunter Johnson celebrates a big play against Wake Forest.

What a debut for the phenom recruit.

With starting quarterback Kelly Bryant out of the game due to an ankle injury, Clemson first turned to backup Zerrick Cooper.

Cooper was ineffective in the two possessions he ran the offense, so head coach Dabo Swinney then called on five-star freshman Hunter Johnson to burn his redshirt.

Johnson delivered, completing 4-of-4 passes on his first drive for 37 yards and his first career touchdown, a 13-yard pop pass to tight end Cannon Smith.

Johnson was the No. 2 quarterback in the 2017 class, who arrived at Clemson with much fanfare.

With another five-star on the way in Trevor Lawrence, the quarterback position for the Tigers appears to be in good hands.
