Clemson is going to be without its star receiver as it kicks off the 2012 football season. According to ESPN, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney has decided to suspend Sammy Watkins for two games following his drug arrest during the offseason.
Watkins was pulled over in May and officers found marijuana and prescription drugs (that he was not prescribed) in his vehicle, and he was charged with two misdemeanor accounts of possession.
Watkins’ absence may come to really hurt the Tigers, as they face off against Auburn in the Georgia Dome on September 1st. The second game is Clemson’s home opener versus Ball State. Watkins was a key cog as a freshman, racking up over 1,200 yards and 12 touchdowns on his way to becoming an All-American.
