Carolina Almost Pulls Off The Upset In Cameron

Blue Devils survive against a resilient Tar Heel team.

Score: No. 2 Duke 73, North Carolina 68

Stars:North Carolina:P.J. Hairston 21 Pts, 6 Reb. Duke:Mason Plumlee 18 Pts, 12 Reb.

Story: This is arguably the biggest rivalry in sports, and it didn’t disappoint last night. A tightly contested and very intense game throughout, but the Blue Devils proved to be too much for the young Tar Heels team. Duke improves to 9-3 in the ACC and 22-2 overall, keeping its No. 2 national ranking in the process. UNC falls to 6-5 in the ACC after this heart-breaking loss to its crosstown rivals. P.J. Hairston had a huge game in only his second start of the season, posting 23 points on 8-17 shooting. Mason Plumlee continued his dominating play, coming up with his fourteenth double-double of the season (18 pts, 12 reb).

UNC outplayed Duke in the first half, holding them to only one 3-pointer and forcing them into 11 turnovers, but the Blue Devils only trailed 33-29 at the half. The second half was played pretty evenly on both sides, but when Duke got hot from three, the Tar Heels were never able to take the lead back. Free throws ended up costing the Heels dearly as they shot a dismal 13-23 from the line and the Blue Devils converted on 17-20 of their attempts. UNC will look for revenge when Duke visits the Dean Dome on March 9th.
