Duke Lands Commitment From 3-Star G Jordan Goldwire

Duke basketball got a commitment tonight, and it came from an unexpected source.

As 2017 recruiting winds down, Duke is still in the running for five-star point guard Trevon Duval and five-star small forward Kevin Knox. But the player the Blue Devils landed tonight is quite different from those two prospects.

Norcross (Ga.) guard Jordan Goldwire isn't even ranked on 247Sports or ESPN. He is a three-star on Rivals and Scout. And now he's headed to Duke.

Goldwire announced his commitment on Twitter after completing a visit to campus today. He picked Duke over offers from UNLV, Tulane, UAB, Mercer, LIU, Hofstra, Eastern Kentucky and Coastal Carolina.

At first glance, this seems like a strange commitment for Mike Krzyzewski and company to take. It doesn't appear related at all to the decisions of Duval or Knox, both of whom are projected to choose Duke.

Pursuing Goldwire could mean the Duke staff has reason to believe freshman point guard Frank Jackson is staying in the NBA Draft. If that's the case, the team could use some additional backcourt depth.

If Jackson returns and Duval and Knox pick Duke, Goldwire would be the Blue Devils' 12th scholarship player.
